Thisstartedwithasimplequestion:whatactuallyhappensbehindadeployedapplication?Frustratedwithfree-tierlimitationsandcuriousaboutVPSinfrastructure,Ibuiltahomeserverfromoldhardwareandgraduallyturneditintomyownlabenvironment.Alongtheway,IlearnedLinux,networking,portforwarding,staticIPs,Nginx,HTTPS,SSH,Tailscale,CloudflareTunnel,andDocker.ItnowrunsmultipleapplicationsandgivesmeaprivateenvironmentIcanaccessremotely,almostlikemyowncloudcomputer.Morethanaproject,ithasbeenahands-onwaytounderstandhowsoftware,hardware,networking,anddeploymentcometogether.
(The Challenge)
Thechallengewasthatalmosteverystepbroughtanewproblem.Istartedwiththehardware,replacingRAMandtheSATASSD,configuringBIOS,andgettingthemachinetoboot.ThenIhadtolearnLinuxfromscratch,includingrecoveringaforgottenpassworddirectlyfromthemachine.FromtherecameLinuxfilesystems,permissions,networking,ISPrestrictions,staticIPissues,portforwarding,andremoteaccess.IusedAIheavilyalongtheway,buteverysolutionhadtobetestedontheactualmachine.Eventoday,newproblemskeepcomingup,andthatisexactlywhatmakesthisprojectvaluabletome.

BuiltaDebian-basedhomeserverandconfiguredittorunmultipleapplicationsusingDocker,Node.js,Django,DRF,andRedis.SetupNginxforreverseproxying,SSHandTailscaleforremoteadministration,CertbotforHTTPS,andCloudflareTunnelforsecureexternalaccess.TheresultisapersonalinfrastructurelabwhereIcandeploy,experiment,breakthings,andlearnbyfixingthem.
